  • The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the planet. Over 1.2 billion children are out of classrooms.

  • As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of online-learning and teaching has taken over remotely and on digital platforms.

  • Research suggests that online learning has been shown to extend memory of data , and take less time, meaning the changes coronavirus have caused could be here to stay.

Covid-19 second wave: Offline and unorganised coaching classes feel the heat!

Several coaching classes offering tutoring for board exams and competitive tests haven't been ready to pivot to online modules. With fresh variants restricting movement across India thanks to Covid-19, these coaching-centre owners are worried tons . Especially in small towns, the unorganised coaching sector has been severely hit. They lack access to a correct online teaching-learning system and thus, are left clueless on the way to revisit on target . This is often where the ‘LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMs (LMS)’ providers inherit play. Several such portals can help the tutors also because the institutes have adapted with this new world of e-learning.

Joydeep Ghosh, owner of Confidence Academy, which features a centre in Agartala, Tripura is facing the heat . The state has imposed a fresh set of restrictions thanks to the second wave and he's worried that students will drop out of his coaching classes.

“It was the need of the hour to shift to an online LMS portal, to ensure smooth conduct of my classes” he says.

On June 10, Tripura recorded the very best single day Covid-19 deaths during the 2nd wave. 14 deaths and 625 new cases with the positivity rate of around 4% have led to an alarming situation within the state.

From April 2021 onwards, various State governments have started imposing restrictions to minimise people’s movement on the road . Non-essential workers are advised to not exit except to shop for essentials and to affect medical emergencies.

A changing education imperative and What does this mean for the future of learning?

It is clear that this pandemic has utterly disrupted the education system and many assert were already losing its relevance. In his book, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, scholar Yuval Noah Harari outlines how schools still specialise in traditional academic skills and rote , rather than on skills like critical thinking and adaptability , which may be more important for fulfilment within the longer term . Could the move to online learning be the catalyst to form a replacement , simpler method of teaching students? While some worry that the rapid nature of the online transition may have disturbed this goal, others plan to make e-learning a neighbourhood of their ‘new normal’ after experiencing the advantages first-hand.

While some believe that the unsynchronised and instant move to e-learning – with no training, insufficient bandwidth, and tiny preparation – will end during a poor user experience that's unreliable to sustained growth, others believe that as replacement an evolved model of education will emerge, with significant benefits. “I believe that the blending of knowledge technology in education is getting to be further accelerated which will eventually become an integral component of school education,“ says Wang Tao, vice chairman of Tencent Cloud and vice chairman of Tencent Education.

Many are already touting the advantages . it's changed the way of teaching. It enables teachers to succeed in teaching students more efficiently and effectively through discussion groups , video meetings, voting and also document sharing, especially during this pandemic. Students also find it's easier to speak on online portals. Many teachers say they go to stay in online mode even after coronavirus, they believe traditional offline learning and e-learning can go hand by hand.
